Like the other protagonists of Pathologic, Daniel is given a formal title to which many people refer to him as. For Daniel, this is The Bachelor; named such for the fact that he has a bachelor's degree in medicine, not quite yet a PhD despite being referred to as a doctor offhand every now and then. Rather than going into proper medical practice, Daniel became a medical researcher in the Capital in thanatology, the study of death. He had his own lab (known as Tanathica), but his research was unfortunately falling short.

Nevertheless, his reputation as a medical professional precedes him as he arrives to town, and many inhabitants refer to him as The Bachelor as a formal title. Initially, this signifies him as a healer (and many of the Steppe people call him "oyun"-- "doctor.") However, as Daniel's time in the town goes on, this starts to take a change; he becomes not a doctor working to heal the town of pestilence, but a glorified errand boy, euthanasiast, and mercenary. Many people send him on their dirty work, and he is even referred to as "bloodthirsty" by the governor of the town. Despite the respectful title, to the people of town he is not much of a healer, especially when a miracle healer rolls into town. It is the fault of the townspeople that a weapon of death has been permanently affixed to his hand.

On the other hand, the Bachelor is just a toy-- so who really cares? He's the favorite doll of the Authorities, so it's only natural that they'd modify him as they please; your most favorite toy is the most used and abused. They just thought he'd be more appealing without his doctor's bag getting in the way.
